Senior Materials Research/Synthesis Scientist – Polymers – R&D

Under broad and general direction from the Vice President Research & Technology Innovation, initiates all programs associated with process development utilizing polymers, new materials developed, materials characterization associated with product design and support to all Corporate functions needing materials input including Marketing, Purchasing, Operations and other research functions.  Researcher / Project Manager will lead internal and external teams in the development and utilization of new materials technologies from conception through commercialization.  Analyses, develops, advises and makes recommendations on product and process utilizing polymer technologies.  This Manager / Researcher will work closely with Product Design to insure appropriate materials selection and integration of new technologies (innovation) into new and existing products.

Conducts materials-related research, consistent with business unit strategies and goals in areas including cost reduction, process improvements, line extension and new products.  Facilitates implementation/‌commercialization of viable options. 

Principal Accountabilities

1.                 Manages materials and polymer development, definition and implementation planning, including external development with suppliers, improvement and new materials integration.

2.                 Develops and defines materials specifications for product and component manufacture.

3.                 Develops and manages new materials evaluation and procurement and the associated integration into the product development process.

4.                 Develops specifications for all new materials.

5.                 Identifies and evaluates capable outside suppliers to expedite the product development process.

6.                 Develops and recommends innovation activities consistent with the goals and objectives for the New Product Development process.

7.                 Identifies cost and SKU(s) reduction opportunities of product platforms.

8.                 Creates new and appropriate testing protocols for characterizing materials for the purpose of qualification but also for input into RTI design capabilities.

9.                 Assists with the builds and pilots of new product development projects and product derivatives.

10.              Supports all segments of the product development process, managing projects within the product development process when required.

11.              Communicates and assists other departments as required for commercialization of cost reduction, proves improvement, line extension and new product/‌process projects.

12.              Serves as a Company expert and resource in polymer/‌materials technology

Organization and Impact:     Program Managers report to this position.

Dollar Accountability: Capital Spending:$3-8M, Cash Flow:$150M, Budget: $2M

Minimum Qualifications Required For This Position

Education:MS or PhD  Polymer Materials Science or related field.

Experience: 10 or more years of product development, research or design experience, as well as management experience.  Additional experience is required managing outside projects as well as projects spanning several organizations, internally and externally.  Solid problem-solving abilities, PC proficiency and experience with state/‌gate product development. Superior written/oral communication, organization and interpersonal skills
